Wikileaks Cables Provide No Surprises

In a confidential diplomatic cable released to a local newspaper by Wikileaks, a U.S. Diplomat wrote that Tommy Turnquest was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Well, blow me down.  That’s news, eh?

Who in the Bahamas, that is not living under a rock, didn’t know that.

The diplomat went further in his “deep analysis” of Bahamian society and politics, saying that Mr Turnquest’s defeat in the 2002 election was “humilating”.

Really?!  Muddo! We Bahamians would have never thought that.

Other revelations from the cables include secrets such as:

* The Turnquest family has a steady stream of income

* Tommy does not project the ‘gravitas’ or oratorical skills expected of a leader

* That Turnquest had to “step down” to “make way” for Ingraham’s return.

Thank God we have U.S. Diplomats to inform us of such important revelations.

If this is the extent of the content from these supposedly secret cables, then the Nassau Guardian should be ashamed of wasting so much ink and paper printing such drivel when there are so many more important journalistic contributions their reporters could be making.

Sarcasm aside, all these “secret” cables really prove is that U.S. Diplomats are like gossiping old ladies sitting under a fig tree, rehashing “secrets” that everybody already knows.

The only ones who should be concerned about the the release of these cables are the diplomats themselves,  because the gossipy, meaningless nature of their activity has now been exposed.

Probably, the only real action that will result from the “leaking” of these cables is perhaps a few diplomats being fired for wasting the U.S. taxpayers time and money.
