A group of officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force are demanding a forensic audit of all the Force’s financial accounts.
The officers believe that senior cops have been abusing the accounts. There have been numerous instances of funds that have gone missing or have been misappropriated.
One account in particluar, the Senior Officers Mess Fund, has been used as a slush fund by a select few corrupt officers.
After being told by senior officers that the fund did not exist, a local newspaper discovered that it not only existed but had over $100,000 in it 2009.
The acount at Scotiabank has since been closed.
It is also suspected that purchase orders have been doctored.
“For instance, if the Force needs to order $50,000 worth of headlights for squad cars, we would be directed to place that order with a particular company and at the end of the day, only $20,000 worth of lights would arrive,” a source on the force told the Tribune.
Corruption is endemic in the Bahamas Police Force and contributes greatly to the crime and lawlessness in The Bahamas.
