Officials and Vendors Tour New Bay Street Straw Market

Officials of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport noted the concerns of members of the Straw Vendors’ Association during a tour of the new Downtown straw market.

Undersecretary Elizabeth Keju said the objective of the tour was to hear the opinions of the vendors on the $11.3 market that is presently under construction. She along with representatives of Pat Rahming and Associates, designers and Cavalier Construction Company, contractor answered questions posed by the members of the Association representing some 400 vendors.

Some of the concerns expressed included the sizes of the display areas, adding extensions to the stalls to allow items to hang, security of the stalls at night and which vendors would occupy spaces designated for craft-making demonstrations.

Undersecretary Keju said that the demonstration booths would give vendors the opportunity to showcase the art of making conch shell jewellery and straw baskets etc. She said all vendors including those from the Family Islands would be able to participate.
