In a rare bit of journalistic equality, the local newspapers have actually called the name of a police corporal who has been accused of being a pedophile.
Normally, police officers who commit crimes in The Bahamas remain nameless in the media. Often the police do not release the names in order to protect their crooked cronies. Other times, the newspapers refuse to print the names because they are afraid of lawsuits.
But in the case of Jayson Clifford Cambridge, 44, of Emerald Gardens, the local papers have actually identified the accused pedophile.
Cambridge is alleged to have had intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. He was arraigned in Magistrate’s Court Tuesday. The offence is alleged to have happened in July, 2010.
Mr Cambridge was not required to enter a plea to the charge during his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez. He was represented by attorney Calvin Seymour and was, of course, granted bail.
The case will resume August 4 and prosecutors expect to present a voluntary bill of indictment.
Police officers having sex with young girls is all too common in the Bahamas. Rarely are they ever punished.
